Life is always a combination of the choices we make and forces playing a hand in where we land. Sometimes it's the consequences of our actions that caused a certain event to take place, sometimes it's just a matter of the forces in the world placing us in that time and place. Regardless of how we land where we land, we all have the choice to make when it comes to how we handle it or what we make of it.

June Ahern always reaches into the heart of readers by sharing a story, like City of Redemption, where choices and fate walk hand-in-hand. She artfully presents stories where her characters are faced with hard truths and hard choices, which will force them to take one path over the other. In this sense, her stories are so very life like. What reader can't relate to a particular event forever altering the way they view their world? What reader can't relate to the idea that a choice made put them in the very position they find themselves? How many times have you looked back and wondered which path life might have taken had a certain event not occurred or you had made a different decision?

Elizabeth Mackey is no different. Elizabeth made a horrible mistake and it cost her her son's life. Reeling from the guilt, shame, and community outrage she seeks a new life in San Fransisco. Unfortunately for Liz, distance doesn't dull our memories or our guilt. Set in the 1960's, during a time of upheaval and great change in the U.S, Liz finds herself immersed in a family of sorts where she forges friendships and discovers that we all have decisions and consequences to cope with. Sometimes the hardest part of life is learning to live with the decisions we've made and finding a way to forgive ourselves.

As this is a pre-release review for City of Redemption, it's unfortunately not available for purchase yet. City of Redemption will release in eBook format in May and in print version format in June. So, keep your eyes peeled for it and keep reading!

Yes, I did use the word "fantastical" correctly. I know, because I looked it up. Not only am I referring to the fact that The Key of Kilenya is a fantastic read, but I'm also referring to the fantasy element. This applies to the "as if conceived by an unrestrained imagination" portion of the definition. (quoted from Dictionary.com)

As is always the case when I read a YA book, I started off not really thinking I was going to like it. The reason I always start this way is because the book is written for someone younger than me, so I have a harder time getting connected with the characters. However, if the author is good at what they do (writing) then they will draw me in regardless of the character's age. Andrea Pearson does just that.

I was so engrossed in Jacob's travel through a gateway to another world that I actually read this story in one sitting. As with all worlds there's a history here that ultimately leads to Jacob's arrival. The Key of Kilenya is a story that will have you asking questions all the way through it. What happened to the people from before? Where did they go? What powers does Jacob hold? How exactly does this key work? Who are "the humans" that come and stay in the tree from time to time? Is there a connection between the people from before and Jacob's family?

I grew frustrated towards the end of the story as I was made to remember that, while I would have a conclusion of sorts, this is the first book in a series. Therefore some of Jacob's story is still left to be told, not all of my questions got answered. Argh! However, I was very happy to note that book two is already available. Oh yeah, it was that good that I immediately searched for the next one in the series. And yes, I am buying it!

My recommendation is to go get yourself both books, The Key of Kilenya and The Ember Gods, and keep reading!

Bear with me for a minute while I explain this one. The Girls' Guide to Dating Zombies by Lynn Messina is a book about Hattie Cross, the main character, who wrote The Girls' Guide to Dating Zombies. So it's a guide within a guide. Maybe that sounds confusing, but it's really not. Lynn is the author (and real), Hattie is the character (and fictional). Still with me? Great!

Lynn's book starts off with a section from Hattie's guide, and then it jumps over to Hattie's life in the present. The book continues to give snippets of The Guide in between portions of Hattie's life since writing The Guide.

Imagine if you will a world where all the men, well almost all the men, have contracted a virus that's turned them into zombies. Women run the world! Doesn't that sound like utopia, ladies? Most standards would say this is a dystopian look at the future, however I'm not sure women would agree.

Are you thinking you'd miss the men? You might. Hattie discusses that in The Guide as well, but she also points out that with a few minor (okay, major) differences zombies aren't far off from men. I don't think I could do Lynn's humor justice by reiterating it here, so I just leave you to read it all for yourself. That's a recommendation, by the way.

Lynn's look at a future where women run the world and the men are zombies is funny, witty, and unique from any book I've put my hands on. There's been lots of looks into the future, whether utopian looks or dystopian looks, and none have made me smile and laugh as this one did. It's fun to see the ways that dating in the future still hold some customs that we have today, and yet things could be so much simpler if we could just putrefy all men's brains to that of a zombie's.

Are you concerned about the bad side of zombies? Don't Lynn, err..Hattie, covers that as well. It's all there. So, if you're worried about what the rumored disaster of 2012 will bring, I recommend you pick up Lynn Messina's The Girls' Guide to Dating Zombies and prepare yourself.

If you're just looking for a fun book that will entertain with some laughter along the way, then I still recommend you get yourself a copy of The Girls' Guide to Dating Zombies by Lynn Messina (and Hattie Cross).

“The Girls’ Guide to Dating Zombies”
by Lynn Messina
Published by Potatoworks Press
Action/Adventure, Comedy, Mystery/Thriller, Romance

BLURB:

Hattie Cross knows what you're thinking: Zombie sex? Ewwwww. But she also knows that since a virus turned 99.9999 percent of human males into zombies, it's statistically impossible to meet--let alone date--the remaining 0.00001 percent. So she writes "The GirlsGuide to Dating Zombies" to help her fellow single women navigate the zombie-relationship waters.

Her practical how-to impresses the CEO of the largest drug company in the world, and before she knows it, Hattie, a reporter for a downmarket tabloid that specializes in conspiracy theories, is sitting down with the woman who single-handedly invented the zombie-behavioral-modification market. Granted access to the inner sanctum of zombaceuticals, she meets an actual, living, breathing M-A-N.

Now Hattie, the consummate professional, is acting like a single girl at the end of the twentieth century: self-conscious, klutzy and unable to form a coherent sentence without babbling. Worst of all, the human male appears to have impaired her ability to think clearly. Because all of a sudden she's convinced a conspiracy is afoot at the drug company and it seems to go all the way to the top!

EXCERPT #1:

Introduction
Why Date a Zombie?

IF YOU’VE BOUGHT this book, then you’re either dating a zombie or thinking about dating a zombie. You know that in this postblight world, your chances of getting hijacked by a terrorist, being staked to a bamboo pole in the Heilongjiang Province of Inner Mongolia and having your spleen eaten by a saber-tooth tiger are eight times greater than meeting one of the estimated 344,923 men left on the planet.

You’re a practical young woman who isn’t willing to waste her time on impossible fantasies sold to her by the Hollywood dream machine.

Welcome to the rest of your life.

Naturally, as sensible as you are, part of you can’t help but wonder if dating a zombie is settling. Can’t a woman like you—smart, funny, attractive, kind—do better than an animated clump of rotting flesh that lives only to consume brains?

No, you can’t.

With 99.9999 percent of the male population transformed into zombies, all that are left are animated clumps of rotting flesh that live only to consume brains.

But you don’t have to be a glass-half-empty girl. Your cup runneth over. You just have to be able to see it.

And that’s why you’re reading The Girls’ Guide to Dating Zombies. This book will help you understand and navigate the challenges and rewards of the zombie-dating lifestyle. You’ll learn how to…

·   Meet zombies. Discover where they hang out and who they hang out with. The best zombie hotspots are just around the corner!
·   Talk to zombies. Chatting with the reliving is easier than you’ve ever imagined! All you need to know are a few key phrases and you and a zombie can have hours of deep, meaningful conversation.
·   Dance with zombies. They might not have brains but boy, do they have rhythm. Master the step-drag-step of their beloved merengue and dance the night away with the zombie of your dreams.
·   Make love with zombies. Physical contact doesn’t have to be icky or gross. With the right accessories and hygiene products, the fetid flesh of a zombie can smell as lovely as a garden rose.
·   Cohabitate with zombies. Zombieproofing your home has never been so easy! A few simple changes will make your living room a safe environment for any zombie, however oblivious to fire, sharp corners and the precious Ming vase your grandmother left you.
·   Medicate zombies. Medication is domestication. All a zombie needs to be a productive member of society is the right dosage. The chart in chapter 21 makes it easy for you to figure out which pills your zombie needs and when.

Remember, at the heart of every relationship is companionship, and this is what zombies provide—in spades.

Zombies are steady.
Zombies are reliable.
Zombies are here.

Plus, they love to go shoe shopping (more about that later!).

I’m not saying that zombies are better than men. Perish the thought! But men are gone and now we women have to do what we’ve done since time immemorial: Make the best of what we have.

And it’s a pretty darn good best!

Trust me, I know. I’ve been having satisfying zombie relationships for over six years and with the help of this book, you will too. Turn the page to get started right now.

The Sweet Treat Sofa

The High-Fiber Breakfast Hour’s Sweet Treat segment kicks off every morning with a flashing red light, a piercing police siren and a dancing pink panda carrying a fuchsia sign that says, i love high-fructose corn syrup fluff from funfoods, across the set. The crowd hoots and hollers because everyone loves a pink panda hopped up on sugar.

The director points to the host, who smiles into the camera as it cuts to her from the audience. “Good morning and welcome back to The High-Fiber Breakfast Hour. Joining me on the luscious pink sofa today is an extra sweet treat for you: Hattie Cross, author of The Girls’ Guide to Dating Zombies.” Delia Fortune, a former Miss America with a towering strawberry bouffant and sparkling superwhite teeth, turns to me with a searching look. “Hattie, we have lots of ground to cover, but I’m going to get right to the nitty-gritty and say, Zombie sex. Ewww.”

I laugh. It’s completely forced and fake, but I’m on a national morning show with a pink panda and a strawberry bouffant. If I can’t roll with a few ewwws, then I should have stayed in bed. “Fair enough. The thought makes a lot of women go ewww.” I look to the audience. “Am I right?”

The response is mixed. Some women clap, but an almost equal number boo. I’m not surprised. Zombie sex has been around for almost as long as variant Y zombies.

“I can tell from the response that some of the ladies here have tried it.” Another round of cheers follows. “I’ll admit that sex with a zombie isn’t the ideal situation. The ideal situation is sex with a human male. Who here has had sex with a human male?”

Dead silence.

“None of us, right? Because human males haven’t existed for the average woman in twenty years. So if you keep that in mind, zombie sex isn’t bad at all. It can certainly be more satisfying than masturbation.” I turn to my host with a twinkle in my eye. “I’m sorry. Can I say masturbation on morning TV?”

Delia twinkles back. “Of course. It’s 2020. You can say anything. But let’s get really real: Zombies smell. They lose body parts. Their flesh is decaying.”

I nod profusely. “All valid points. However, with the right drug regimen, these conditions can be controlled. For example, Zombreeze neutralizes zombie smell from the inside. It can even make your boyzomb smell like roses. I devote an entire chapter to zombaceuticals in my book.”

“I’m glad you brought up drugs. Isn’t it true that you have to medicate zombies for them to have sex? Doesn’t that underscore how unnatural the act is?”

“All living and reliving things have a sex drive,” I explain. “It’s the basic nature of the beast. Sure, you have to use certain chemical stimulants in order for the zombie to perform physically, but the drive is there. Think of the late-twentieth-century male suffering from erectile dysfunction. It’s the same principal.”

The audience cheers again. “All right. But kissing. You have to admit that’s pretty gross.”

“Oh, completely,” I say with girlish glee. The effort of being so aggressively upbeat is starting to make me light-headed, but I stay the course. “Kissing a zombie isn’t for everyone. It’s certainly not for me. But that’s a decision each woman should be free to make. Again, I refer you to late-twentieth-century practices that some women chose to perform and others didn’t. I think of kissing as the equiv-alent to what used to be described as swallowing.” I nod to the audience. “You know what I’m talking about, right?”

The cheers turn into howls and last a full thirty seconds.

Delia quiets the audience with a wave. “All right. We’ve talked about the worst part of dating a zombie. Now let’s talk about the best. What tops the list?”

“Never having to sit by the phone waiting for him to call. No mind games. No wondering if he likes you or doesn’t like you. No obsessing,” I say, referring to the common neurotic female practice that was at the heart of dating human males two decades ago.

“I can get behind that,” Delia says.

“So I’m starting to win you over?”

From the very first page of Love is a Wounded Soldier by Blaine Reimer you know this book is something special. It's a book that deserves a review full of all those lofty literary words that trained critics, professors, and true literary aficionados use. Unfortunately for this review, and you, I write my reviews for the everyday reader who just wants to know in everyday terms how the story was.

It was great. Reimer is a true story teller. He has the gift. From the first page you can tell this isn't just a book, Reimer is illustrating the story so that you can see it's progression in your mind like a reel of film. The personalities jump off the page and into your mind. The scenes come to life. You ache for Robert as a little boy, you cringe for the young couple separated by war, and you hold onto hope for the happy.

Love is a Wounded Soldier deserves such words as eloquent, prose, poignant, triumphant, heart warming, gut wrenching, recognition deserved, sweet, time stealing, illustrative, should be a national best seller!

I felt a little like Alice while reading Puppet Parade by Zeinab Alayan, or maybe that should be Pinocchio as it deals with puppets. No, Alice is definitely the right fit. Reading Puppet Parade is like entering the world of Wonderland. The characters (puppets and other people) are quirky and amusing. There are worlds within the world, all of which make up a whole that is quite fascinating. It's a bizarre but incredibly fun world.

The two main characters (Oliver and Sophie) have both been trapped in their lives, one by choice and one by force. Once their paths have crossed, they decide to set out on the journey to find Oliver's puppets who have come to life and fled their own captivity. This journey takes them into a world where things aren't quite what they seem and where finding out the truth could be dangerous.

Just like Wonderland there are some bad and dark things at work, and there are characters you just don't want to cross. Oliver and Sophie are determined though and follow the path right into the heart of evil.

So if you're interested in an Alice-like story that's a geared for a more adult you, then you should read Puppet Parade. Come meet Oliver, Sophie, and Oliver's puppets (the Lewd Lion, the Annoying Ass, the Meak Monster, just to name a few) and get for the train ride (no, not down the rabbit hole) you'll likely never forget.

Today's 2 Beans
Today is one week to the day (pretty much to the minute as I write this) that I said good-bye to my Baby Girl. (My Mastiff for those of you not already in the know). It was a terribly hard decision to make, because while her legs were failing, her heart and her mind were still so very apparent.

A while back I read An Angel With Fur by Russell Blake about his loss of his dog and bawled my way through most of the book. I knew without a doubt how much it would pain me to say good-bye to Baby. I just didn't know that I had less than a year left with her.

I remember Russell saying something along the lines of all of us think our pets are absolutely the greatest or the most special. I agree. If you're smart when you choose an animal, then they choose you almost as much as you choose them. It's almost as if you're finding each other, which makes it a perfect fit.

I will admit I was absolutely floored by just how much grief I felt with her loss. I knew it would be hard, but it absolutely flattened me the day following her passing. I was further stunned as I found myself getting emotionally sideswiped off and on throughout the week. There were so many moments in my days that I didn't realize she had been a part of, and they would sneak up on me. I anticipated hearing her whine through the door after I pulled into the garage. I actually heard her sigh as I adjusted the blankets in preparation for getting into bed the other night, this was a normal occurrence that I don't know if it was out of disturbance or satisfaction that all were accounted for now. I went outside to sit and thought I should head in because she didn't come out with me. I would find myself trying to step over her as I'd get up off the couch, because she would always sit right below me. I came home from walking one morning, and it hit like a ton of bricks that she wouldn't be on the other side of the door wagging her tail when I opened it.

That was one of the best moments with Baby was when I came home. She was so excited when I walked in the door. It didn't matter if I had only stepped outside for a few minutes, she was so happy I was back in the house. She would do this little tap dance with her feet until I set down whatever I had in my hand. Then she'd circle me while I petted her head and back. Next was the crazy figure-8 she'd do, I don't know if this was a way of marking me or to make sure I reached all possible parts of her body. Only once she was done with this ritual could I then walk away and know she wouldn't follow my every step.

A friend once told me that I have a penchant for choosing pets with the largest sense of personality that she's ever met. None of our pets are ever just animals. They always seem to have these quirks (neuroses, if you will) that make them truly unique. Baby was no different. She was a large, 185-lb bundle of personality.

It seems her whole goal in life was to love and to be loved. She, without a doubt, fulfilled her purpose to the utmost. Everyone who ever met her fell in love with her. "What a sweetheart you are" was a favored saying around her. She would adore anyone who took the time to pet her ears, scratch her back, or rub her belly. She was an adoration whore. She'd bare that belly for just about anyone with a kind voice and strong hand.

I think the biggest compliment to her beautiful soul was the fact that everyone we knew was so happy to know they'd have a last opportunity to see her and spoil her before she was gone. Even a couple of friends who had been bitten by large dogs when they were younger had said she was the dog that brought them around on large breeds not being dangerous.

But I could go on forever about my Baby Girl and drive you all insane with it all. But I won't. I just want to thank all of you who left comments and who sent emails. It was all truly appreciated. I also want to thank the authors who have been so extremely patient with me during this time. You all have been so utterly gracious, I can never thank you enough!

Making up for lost time, there will be a slew of reviews coming your way this week:

California Girl Chronicles: Brea and the City of Plastic is a fun bit of fluff. That's not a criticism, it's just stated as fact. There's no deep thought-provoking moments, it's just a fun story for pure entertainment purposes. We all need that from time to time. Fun and laughter are important elements to have in a life.

Brea is a 22-year-old wanna-be screenwriter who also happens to be completely inept at relationships. From Lance, to Kale, to Drew Brea's bed-jumping and bad decisions do start to wear a bit thin after bit. However, we've all been young and stupid once, so it's also a touch understanding. While Brea is a smart girl, she is definitely stupid when it comes to men and relationships. Who hasn't been at one point in time or another?

The book is touted as being "Sex in the City meets Entourage". While I wouldn't go that far with it, it's definitely an entertaining read. Brea doesn't have the years of experience that Carrie and her friends had, which tends to make her character have a little less depth than the City girls did. Not that they had a ton of it (depth), but they had a bit more life experience to round them out. Brea comes across as a shallow bit of fluff, but there's definite potential for her. The best part is the reader gets to go along for the ride. And what a ride it is. There's humor, hot and steamy sex scenes, and even some cringe-worthy moments. You know the ones. The "oh honey, I've been there" kind of moments.

So if you're looking for some fun, pick up a copy of California Girl Chronicles: Brea and the City of Plastic. Huh, that sort of sounds like "for a good time call". Which thinking of it, that might be apropos.

BLURB:

Melanie Winters and Daniel Montgomery shared a love they believed bonded them together for life.  After the tragic loss of their daughter, overwhelming grief and misguided guilt distorts the truth, and their relationship ends in unanswered questions.

For nine years, they drift through life, each unable to forget the one who holds their heart.

Now, when their lives again intersect, will the power that drew them together be enough to heal the wounds from their past?

Pulled is a story of attraction and separation, of destiny and duty, of a love so strong it refuses to give up even when all others have.

EXCERPT:

I glanced at the clock.

Shit—nearly six o’clock. I needed to hurry. I’d lost track of time and Nicholas would be home soon. I wiped the tears from my face before carefully gathering the pictures from the bedroom floor. My chest weighed heavy as I collected each one, cherishing the memories a moment longer as I tucked them away in the envelope.

The memories were all I had and I clung to them as if they were my last breath, knowing that once they faded, there would truly be no reason to go on. I hid the envelope at the bottom of the large jewelry box in the back of the closet, mindful to spread the necklaces out over the hidden compartment. Nicholas had never found them, but I was certain he would destroy them if he ever did.

Drawing in a deep breath, I ran my hands through my hair and dragged myself from the past I had immersed myself in for the last two hours and forced myself downstairs.

My footsteps echoed against the marble floor, each an accent of emptiness. I entered the kitchen, the only sanctuary I had. Every room of this house was gaudy and overdone, designed by the pompous for the pompous, except for this haven. It was no less extravagant, but held a warmth missing from all of the others.

As I worked, my thoughts inevitably wandered back to those beloved pictures hidden away in the back of my closet, but even they weren’t enough to ward off the anxiety steadily building within me as the passing minutes warned of Nicholas’s arrival. At six thirty-one, I heard the garage door open. Bile rose in my throat.

“Melanie?” Nicholas called from the entryway.

“In the kitchen,” I called weakly. Maybe he would go upstairs and spare me a few more minutes, but of course, I never had that kind of luck. I heard his footsteps approaching and prepared myself.

“Dinner ready?” He yanked at his tie as he came through the door.

“Um, not quite, just a couple more minutes,” I said, not meeting his face.

I felt him pause, though I refused to look up. I’d learned a long time ago how to survive in hell. The less I interacted with him the better.

He snorted through his nose, muttering, “Worthless whore,” under his breath.

I gritted my teeth, holding in the anger his accusation triggered.

He set his briefcase on the island next to me and tossed his tie over the top of it. “What time do I get home from work, Melanie?” Nicholas dipped his head, forcing me to look at him.

“Six-thirty.”

“Is it too much to ask that dinner is ready when I get home?” he said, “or do you have something better to do with your useless life?”

I cringed but said nothing. He was the one who didn’t want me to work.

“I didn’t think so.” He leaned in closer, his words a low warning. “When I tell you dinner needs to be ready at six-thirty, it means dinner is to be ready at six-thirty. Do you understand?”

I saw the threat in his eyes. He had never hurt me physically, but he made sure I knew who was in charge. I’d given up any control nine years ago when I’d followed him here to Chicago, looking for an escape from the pain.

I knew then what this life would be like. I’d met him at the airport when I’d fled Colorado that final time, the trip that severed the last thread holding my heart together. Nicholas hadn’t seen the broken girl who sat numb with nothing but pain swimming in her eyes. He saw the young, beautiful girl, the one who said nothing at all but seemed to be willing to do whatever he said.

I wasn’t stupid. I had known exactly what he wanted, but I could never go back to Colorado Springs to face what I could no longer have, and I refused to stay with my
mother in Dallas.

So I left all of it behind, moving with Nicholas to Chicago just days after I returned from Colorado.

I knew then Nicholas would never bring me happiness. That had never been the point. My heart belonged to another and would never be his. All I wanted was a way out, while Nicholas got the trophy wife he thought he deserved. The only thing I hadn’t anticipated was how the numbness I felt for him would evolve over nine years into bitterness and loathing.

This is a difficult review to write, because there are so many contradictory feelings and thoughts after reading The Lord of Dream and Metal by Zinna Kingsley.

For example, my overall reaction was that while the story itself wasn't my kind of cup (meaning I didn't thoroughly enjoy it), I did find that it was well-written. That seems extremely contradictory, doesn't it? Let me say it a different way. I didn't like the overall plot of the story, however even though I didn't care for it, it was written well enough that I could refrain from just walking away. If a book can hold your attention even though you don't care for it, I think it (or the author) deserves some definite kudos for it!

Another area that created a contradiction for me was the gap between the narration and the content. During moments of narration and conversation I felt as if I was being "talked down to", as if I expected people to be so non-complex. And yet during all of the science talk (it is science fiction) I was utterly lost and feeling like a child trying to keep up with an adult conversation.

The Lord of Dream and Metal even resists being pegged into any one genre. There are elements of science and science fiction, there's the mystical and magical, there's darkness and hope, there's paranormal and yet very human element, there's bad people and good people, there's supporters and backstabbers, and so many other threads to keep track of.

As I said it's a well-written story, there's so much going on to keep you entertained. I just couldn't give it a higher rating because I personally found it not for me, but I'm not shallow and can admit that it was probably because I felt confused and lost much of the time. I've never been known for my science skills. However, I think there are plenty of others out there who will not only "get" it, but who will also love the story.
